Thuparamaya
Thuparamaya, regarded as the first stupa built following the introduction of Buddhism is located in Mahamewna Park in the ancient city of Anuradhapura.
It was constructed by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC and is believed to enshrine the right collarbone relic of the Buddha.
The original stupa had the shape of a heap of paddy, but later restorations gave it the bell shape.
Around the stupa stand numerous stone pillars, which are the remains of a vatadage — a circular relic house built to protect the sacred structure.
